Well There Goes My Career...

The UK’s product design industry is ‘over-confident, overpaid… and in danger of being left behind’, according to Pearson Matthews director Jim Dawton.

Writing in Design Week tomorrow, Dawton lists domestic and foreign threats to British product designers. Competition from China and the South Korean ‘design powerhouse’, the growth of in-house design departments and ‘global economic turmoil’ will all squeeze the UK market next year, he writes.

Dawton forecasts that in 2008, ‘design education is going to become increasingly irrelevant to the needs of the design business’ and that a ‘small number of good design graduates’ will send salaries spiralling unsustainably high.

Quoting Dott07 director John Thackara’s edict that ‘the age of the object is dead’, Dawton wonders if some product designers are experiencing an identity crisis.

‘For me, it isn’t whether or not we will continue to consume objects, but rather whether the UK product design industry will remain interested enough, or even competitive enough, to design them,’ he says.

Priestman Goode is singled out for praise for its design of the BT Home Hub, and Dawton also congratulates Seymour Powell on its purchase by Loewy last year. ‘We will all dream of similar deals,’ he says.

MoMA updates design collection

Really think that this show at the MoMA would be such a good influence on my out look on design, however seeing as NYC is a £500 air ticket away I shall just have to do with reading news articles and looking at pictures of the collection online...gutted!!

New York’s Museum of Modern Art is updating its design collection this month with an installation introducing around 60 objects designed within the past five years.

The Just In: Recent Acquisitions from the Collection installation is a selection of work representing the diversity of contemporary design practice, including the latest innovations in architectural, industrial and graphic design.

Among the new acquisitions on view are three graphic identity projects designed by US consultancy 2x4, the architectural model of Seoul’s Togok Towers designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, as well as a variety of new seat designs, textiles displays and works by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

Organised by Paola Antonelli, the recently promoted senior curator of the museum’s department of architecture and design, and Christian Larsen, curatorial assistant, the installation features in the Leonard Dobbs Gallery and will remain on display until November.

Next Fourth Plinth commission

So my first blog about something creative then. Whilst scanning my emails I came across an article that caught my eye mainly because I have just spent my Christmas and new year in London. The article can be read below with a link to see the entries. Whilst I find a couple of the designs a little bemusing, I must say the ship in a bottle and the mirror ideas do sound intriguing.

The shortlist of artists for the next commission for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, which will follow Thomas Schütte's Model for a Hotel 2007, has been announced. The six artists are:

  • Jeremy Deller
  • Tracey Emin
  • Antony Gormley
  • Anish Kapoor
  • Yinka Shonibare
  • Bob & Roberta Smith

Find out more about these artists and view images of the models.

What is the Fourth Plinth?

The Fourth Plinth is in the north-west of Trafalgar Square, in central London. Built in 1841, it was originally intended for an equestrian statue but was empty for many years. It is now the location for specially commissioned art works.

...New Dawn New Day...

So, Its 2008 and I have brought it upon my self to start a blog. So starts the ramblings of a lost and confused person!!...Though they do say it helps to talk about things. As a new year has begun I have decided to take the time to reflect on the last year and to set myself goals for this new year...not that I am going to go into the details about my life! I guess then this would be a very appropriate time to begin a new blog.

Looking back at the last year and myself I have started to notice a change to my personality. I have previously had a very out going and confident approach to life however over the last year or so I feel that I have started to become a little more of an introvert, given the right situation, however, I revert back to my old self. I am actually a little worried for myself actually as i have this attitude that if i cant see it it cant hurt me or its
not really happening, or if I keep to myself I'll be OK.

Well we simply cant be having any of that, so for this new year its time for me to get it back together and get myself to where I should be!

So my blog then...well, I shall be using this as a way to express myself...as all blogs do/are designed to do, posting things that I find interesting...which I hope will give me a better focus on my life and my career, being a design graduate I'm sure most of my blogs will consist of
creative influences and general ramblings, so enjoy and add whatever you like...

...It Starts

Thanks Nick
